This fundraiser is one of our favorites! Many of our volunteers love gift wrapping, and we are happy to use this passion to raise money for our sanctuary. 

No need to bring any gift wrapping supplies with you. Just come by with your present and FUR will take care of the rest!

THE HISTORY OF GIFT WRAPPING

Like most long-standing traditions, it’s hard to know the exact origin. But according to researchers, the fist known use of wrapping paper was in China around 100 BC, when the government would wrap money in paper as gifts for governmental officials. Before that, gifts, if wrapped at all, were wrapped in cloth. Even so, people often preferred practicality and used a simple box or sack for gift giving.

By the 1800’s wealthy people were commonly using thick paper to wrap their holiday gifts, and later that century, it became popular for people to use red, white and green tissue paper for wrapping presents. Gift wrapping as we know it today started in 1917 in Kansas City, when a local stationery shop ran out of tissue paper and offered decorated paper meant for lining envelopes instead. The new look went viral. Well, as viral as it could in 1917. And the rest, as they say, is history!

FUR is a non-profit, cage-free, last-chance sanctuary dedicated to the rescuing, rehabilitation and rehoming of cats in our community. Operated mostly by volunteers and funded almost exclusively through donations, FUR’s goal is simple: to eliminate feline homelessness and reduce shelter euthanasia rates.
