Including a legacy gift in your will or estate plan helps ensure the sustainability of FUR in a way that makes your core values known to others. Your support of our mission will be long remembered and serve as an inspiration to others.

How Your Gift Helps

FUR is almost entirely funded by donations from our supporters. When you leave a planned gift for FUR, you’re helping to provide vet care, medicine, food, litter, and Sanctuary supplies. Other FUR expenses include a dedicated Sanctuary Manager focused on the wellbeing of our kitties, insurance, and utilities.

Types of Planned Gifts

While there are a variety of ways to include FUR in your estate plans, the two most common are:

Will or Trust Bequests

Leaving a gift to FUR can be as simple as updating your will or trust. With one sentence, you can provide for FUR’s future and leave yourself the flexibility to make adjustments if your circumstances change. You can leave FUR a dollar amount, a percentage or the “residue” of your estate (the remainder after all specific bequests are made).

Beneficiary Designations

Do you have a pension plan, retirement account or life insurance policy? You can name FUR as a beneficiary and designate a percentage of the policy to be paid to FUR.

Once you’ve decided on the type of gift, you’ll want to make your wishes official. You can do this in the following ways:

Will or Trust Bequests

It’s always best to work with your attorney or legal consultant when updating your will so that your wishes are captured correctly. Get started with the example language below.

“I give, devise, and bequeath to Feline Urgent Rescue of Western North Carolina, Inc., located in Waynesville, NC, Tax ID 46-3129537, the sum of $_______ for its unrestricted use.”

“All (or _%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of the assets, both real and personal and wherever situated, which I may own or be entitled to at the time of my death, I give, devise, and bequeath to Feline Urgent Rescue of Western North Carolina, Inc., located in Waynesville, NC, Tax ID 46-3129537, for its unrestricted use.”

Beneficiary Designations

To leave a percentage of a pension plan, retirement account or life insurance policy to FUR, request a Change of Beneficiary form from your insurance company or plan administrator. Update the beneficiaries on your policy per the provided instructions. You may want to share this decision with any other beneficiaries listed on your policy.

Important FUR Information

We created the Friends of FUR Legacy Society to recognize generous, forward-thinking donors who support our long-term success through a planned gift. Your thoughtfulness helps to ensure FUR’s future – and the future of the kitties we will be able to rescue because of your gift.

To thank you for your commitment of a planned gift, you will receive a personalized tour of the FUR Sanctuary and a customized brick in FUR’s Memorial Garden. In addition, we will honor members of our legacy society with recognition on our website and in our annual report. (You may opt out, if you choose).

If you have questions, would like more information or have already made FUR a part of your legacy, please let us know. Our planned giving liaison, Jennie Kirby, is ready to help.
